Parachute Koloro

Koloro is a character my girlfriend Mujia created, it's like kind of like her mascot, this is how Koloro would look in my vision (or style), she would use that long stretchy cat for something more useful like parachuting hahaha.

Toronto Underground Market

So I haven't drawn too much lately, it's been just work work work, but this was interesting enough to blog about, my friend Ian Sit got himself into becoming a vendor at the first ever Toronto Underground (food) Market, "TUM" for short. Me being the only other friend that really enjoys cooking as a hobby he got me and my girlfriend (Mujia Liao) to help out in this challenge... is save to say that without our help this would have fell apart for him hahaha, he decided to cook a breakfast compact into a dumpling, the dumpling had a egg yolk inside, a little bit of bacon infused maple syrup, some fresh cooked bacon bits for salt, fresh parsley for some freshness, wrapped in vermicelli wrapper and deep fried for crunchiness. the even itself seemed like quite a success with many awesome vendors cooking up really good food.

We also got to aprons and a t-shirt from the event, the apron came in handy for keeping the messy egg whites at bay. Over all it was a very tiring event cooking/serving all day, but it was quite a experience and over all response to our dumpling seems pretty positive, which is great considering we were underdogs (and don't actually cook for a living) compared to the other vendors which were pros.

Here are some blogs and articles covering the events and our http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifdumplings:

Electro-Sapper Trap

"Spy's Sappin' Mah Sentry!"

This is usually the class I use for fighting off Engineer's annoying sentry guns, I run up on them disguised as a Engineer, electro-sap their sentry...aaaand STAB!

Pill Med-bot

So the group seem to like the pill version of the med-bot thumbnails, so I tried developing the idea some more, but with this version I have fatter feet, probably can't transform into a more compact version like I originally wanted in the suitcase version...Oh and his size ratio is smaller than before at the director's request.

Go Ninja...

Been trying to come up with some details from a silhouette design that Mujia did for the ninja character, it's a lot more challenging than anticipated, specially when I'm not entirely certain that the other outfits look like, either way I think Mujia will end up finalizing the designs anyways. I'll try to get back to the robot designs too.

Here is some sketches and doodles I usually do while at work sometimes, very quick and rough to get the idea down on paper before it's gone.

On another note the Anthology Project books finally came, I donated some money to help kick start the project for Vol. 2, I felt it was a pretty cool project for Canadian artist to get their work printed, they sent me some extra stuff as a "thank you" for helping the kick start.

More Ideas

Some more character concept doodles...

On another note...

"On Friday March 11, 2011, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake hit Japan. This has triggered 4 metre waves in Japan and tsunami warnings across the Pacific coastline. Thousands of people are reported dead, and many more are injured or missing. The earthquake has caused fires and severe damage to buildings, leaving thousands of households without electricity."

Please donate whatever you can to the Red Cross to help out the people in Japan.

New Side Project...

So it's been awhile, nothing much has happened other than wake up, go to work, work, eat lunch, work, coffee walks, work, go home, play some Battlefield: Bad Company 2, sleep, repeat. It's been fun being a cg lighter and we have learned a lot in the past few months, but me and my ex-classmates/co-workers figured we need a side project to get the blood flowing again and get some new things added to our portfolios/demo reels. So these quick thumbnails are the start of hopefully a lot more designs and concept art for the new project we are in the process of discussing... other than that I can't say much about it yet.

On another note me and a friend got to see Baths and Braids in concert last weekend, it was quite a awesome show, but before the show we decided to cook ourselfs some dinner (Cooking being my other hobby I love)

We ended up cooking these giant bad boys, along with some ribs, and mystery discound fish from the St-Lawrence Market.

York and Angelica's Story

This is a short I did for my sister's wedding night, while I was still working on my Final Film in the Computer Animation program at Sheridan College. I did my best at a short time frame while jugleling both projects.

Animated in Flash and composited in After Effects, narrated by my girlfriend Mujia Liao, and music "borrowed" from Lullatone. lullatone.com

I emailed Lullatone to let them know I used their music and let them check out the animation this was Shawn's response:

Hi Felipe,

That is awesome! You are such an amazing brother!

Thanks for letting us be a little part of it,

Shawn

Aniwow! 2010

So I just found out yesterday morning that the film I did in Computer Animation was submitted and screening in Beijing this weekend at the Aniwow Animation festival, it was the first time I heard of this, so I assume Sheridan College is the one that submitted my film along with a few other classmates. I saw the list on the handbook pdf. My first reaction was COOLIOS!

Hellboy Doodle

FINALLY picked up Volume 6 of Hellboy TPB called "Strange Places" and also picked up the short story compilation novel "Hellboy: Oddest Jobs", I think it was one of the last full Hellboy books that Mignola drew, been meaning to pick it up long time ago but never had the money and time. Due to my excitement I ended up doodling some Hellboy sketches at work.

Think Pink

So it's been awhile since I posted on my blog since my film, reason being shortly after graduation I landed a job as a lighter/compositor back with March Entertainment(the past studio I worked for on the show Dex Hamilton) This time around March is bigger with many new faces leading us.The show I was brought in to work on is call "Mia and Me" after we finished a promo for the MIP JR convention in Paris it turned out to be a big hit. While I was waiting on renders and such...the show's content influenced me to doddle nothing but unicorns...pink ones for that matter. I'm really excited to see this show through the end and where it all leads.

You can check out the article here; "Mia and Me is MIP Jr's Most-Requested Show"

Here is a photo from the convention booth:

The Bounty

A short film by Felipe Siem

Music by Gordon Goodwin
gord-goodwin.blogspot.com

My final project for the Computer Animation program at Sheridan College, completed in about 16 weeks.

This past 4 months was a great experience, to be able to start from concept, to storyboard, to modelling, texturing, rigging, 3D layout, animation, lighting, rendering, compositing. I got to experience every stage in making a 3D short film.

Music was from my buddy Gord Goodwin, he created a pretty awesome jazzy track that goes well with the film. Can't thank him enough for creating the music at such a short notice.

I also got to work with some pretty talented friends and classmates, working and problem solving together.

Old Stuff Again

While looking around my server folder I found some...

thumbnails:

storyboards:

Found my old thumbnails and storyboards panels I did for my film 4 month ago, I'll only show a few of the panels because more or less the camera shots changed along the way of production, and the ending is a different resolution, but it's definately fun to look back at how it all started and the way it evolved from 2D doddles to a full rendered 3D film.

Cha Siu Test Render

A test render of my character Cha Siu, touched up in PS to try and figure out the lighting for scene 12, to use as reference on post, no occlusion pass yet.

City Test Render

A test render of my exterior set, light done with a mixture if Maya and Vray lights, touch ups in PhotoShop to test on the over all feel for compositing in After Effects.

*edit: did a test render with enviromental fog, I think it gives it a nice grungy feel.

Yearbook Cover

Had to get this character pose in for the yearbook cover, modeled, rigged in maya, rendered and lighting with Vray. Almost done all my animation, now just need to finalize the lights and some texture issues then is off to rendering and compositing.
