So I haven't drawn too much lately, it's been just work work work, but this was interesting enough to blog about, my friend Ian Sit got himself into becoming a vendor at the first ever Toronto Underground (food) Market, "TUM" for short. Me being the only other friend that really enjoys cooking as a hobby he got me and my girlfriend (Mujia Liao) to help out in this challenge... is save to say that without our help this would have fell apart for him hahaha, he decided to cook a breakfast compact into a dumpling, the dumpling had a egg yolk inside, a little bit of bacon infused maple syrup, some fresh cooked bacon bits for salt, fresh parsley for some freshness, wrapped in vermicelli wrapper and deep fried for crunchiness. the even itself seemed like quite a success with many awesome vendors cooking up really good food.

We also got to aprons and a t-shirt from the event, the apron came in handy for keeping the messy egg whites at bay. Over all it was a very tiring event cooking/serving all day, but it was quite a experience and over all response to our dumpling seems pretty positive, which is great considering we were underdogs (and don't actually cook for a living) compared to the other vendors which were pros.

So the group seem to like the pill version of the med-bot thumbnails, so I tried developing the idea some more, but with this version I have fatter feet, probably can't transform into a more compact version like I originally wanted in the suitcase version...Oh and his size ratio is smaller than before at the director's request.

Been trying to come up with some details from a silhouette design that Mujia did for the ninja character, it's a lot more challenging than anticipated, specially when I'm not entirely certain that the other outfits look like, either way I think Mujia will end up finalizing the designs anyways. I'll try to get back to the robot designs too.

Here is some sketches and doodles I usually do while at work sometimes, very quick and rough to get the idea down on paper before it's gone.

On another note the Anthology Project books finally came, I donated some money to help kick start the project for Vol. 2, I felt it was a pretty cool project for Canadian artist to get their work printed, they sent me some extra stuff as a "thank you" for helping the kick start.

New Side Project...

So it's been awhile, nothing much has happened other than wake up, go to work, work, eat lunch, work, coffee walks, work, go home, play some Battlefield: Bad Company 2, sleep, repeat. It's been fun being a cg lighter and we have learned a lot in the past few months, but me and my ex-classmates/co-workers figured we need a side project to get the blood flowing again and get some new things added to our portfolios/demo reels. So these quick thumbnails are the start of hopefully a lot more designs and concept art for the new project we are in the process of discussing... other than that I can't say much about it yet.

On another note me and a friend got to see Baths and Braids in concert last weekend, it was quite a awesome show, but before the show we decided to cook ourselfs some dinner (Cooking being my other hobby I love)

We ended up cooking these giant bad boys, along with some ribs, and mystery discound fish from the St-Lawrence Market.

FINALLY picked up Volume 6 of Hellboy TPB called "Strange Places" and also picked up the short story compilation novel "Hellboy: Oddest Jobs", I think it was one of the last full Hellboy books that Mignola drew, been meaning to pick it up long time ago but never had the money and time. So it's been awhile since I posted on my blog since my film, reason being shortly after graduation I landed a job as a lighter/compositor back with March Entertainment(the past studio I worked for on the show Dex Hamilton) This time around March is bigger with many new faces leading us.The show I was brought in to work on is call "Mia and Me" after we finished a promo for the MIP JR convention in Paris it turned out to be a big hit. While I was waiting on renders and such...the show's content influenced me to doddle nothing but unicorns...pink ones for that matter. I'm really excited to see this show through the end and where it all leads.

My final project for the Computer Animation program at Sheridan College, completed in about 16 weeks.

This past 4 months was a great experience, to be able to start from concept, to storyboard, to modelling, texturing, rigging, 3D layout, animation, lighting, rendering, compositing. I got to experience every stage in making a 3D short film.

Music was from my buddy Gord Goodwin, he created a pretty awesome jazzy track that goes well with the film. Can't thank him enough for creating the music at such a short notice.

I also got to work with some pretty talented friends and classmates, working and problem solving together.

Found my old thumbnails and storyboards panels I did for my film 4 month ago, I'll only show a few of the panels because more or less the camera shots changed along the way of production, and the ending is a different resolution, but it's definately fun to look back at how it all started and the way it evolved from 2D doddles to a full rendered 3D film.

So aside from my Final Film, I'm also working on another side project, it was something I promised my sister for her wedding night, it's a 4 minute short I'll be showing on her wedding night, a story on how she and her fiance first meet and what lead them to the wedding night.

It'll be a mix of Flash animation, After Effects and coloured in Photoshop...all needs to be done by next month, that's part of the reason I haven't had much time to do my own art, too much school final film and this to really have time for anything this summer.

R.I.P Gerry Zeldin

Gerry was my last Life Drawing teacher before I graduated from the BAA Animation program in 2008, I think we were actually lucky enough to be Gerry's last class before he left Sheridan.

I found out last year that he was suffering from terminal cancer, and for months his wife was passing on all the well wishes to to Gerry from Facebook to him, he passed away on May 20Th 2010, I was always afraid to disappoint Gerry which in turn made me try harder in life drawing, my final year in school with him was the year I came out with the best life drawings and I owe it all to him for pushing us all so hard and telling it like it is when it sucked. He was a great teacher that passed on his knowledge to many students, and touched many lives in the process, he has definitely left a great legacy in his life time, I hope his teachings and knowledge will be passed on by us to the a next generation of artist.

This is a preliminary concept illustration of the 2 characters for my 1 mins short I'll be doing for my film in the Computer Animation program at Sheridan, the design is inspired by a illustration I did back in 2008 while rushing some art to add to my portfolio, when I drew it up I knew I wanted to make a short film surrounding it...I just didn't know what at that time, so now it's the time to get that out again and re-imagine it in 3D! let's hope it all turns awesome.

Tried some Image Lighting on Maya, did 2 test render...damn it sure takes long to render, but I really like some of the results, but probably too long of render time to actually use for a short animation. After a few classes I realised how important lighting is, without good lighting 3D models just look like shit.

Found out today that one of my favorate Musician past away at the age of 36, The car crash that killed Nujabes took place on February 26, 2010, the same day a earthquake struck off the coast of Japan.

Nujabes really changed and openned my taste in music over the years with the hybrid of hip hop and jazz, before his music came along the only hiphop I knew was the mainstream ones about guns, money, girls. It all started with Samurai Champloo. Nujabes brought a very different uplifting feel to hiphop, that really helped me through many tough times in school or just in my personal life. I've been a huge fan since and been waiting for that next album that never came...We'll all miss you Nujabes his awesome music help influence that music taste I have now, and perhaps even the kind of person I am now.

Kubrick Toy Test Render

So as a assignment we have to do a 10 sec interstitial, like one of those "We'll be right back!" right before commercials, we had to pick a toy we own so we could hold it while we modelled it, I picked my little Kubrick Commando I got from Andrew years ago.

Still a work in progress, I still need to play around with the displacement map on the gasmask, then need to rig it for the actual animation. Here is the idea/storyboard I pitched to the class;

So I normally don't watch or play much hockey, but this Canada VS USA gold medal game was sooo intense, I was on the edge of my seat, Canada defeated the US 3-2 in overtime sudden death to win the gold medal in mens hockey!

GO CANADA GO!!!

Oh and we ended up with the most Gold medals in the Winter Olympics, pretty good even if we are 3rd place in medal counts.

My one complain was...I missed Crosby's goal ...while I looked up to check the clock for time...I had to wait for a replay. -_-

Google vs. China

So after reading this article on the google blog It was like rearing something out of some covert hacker/spy fictional story, very interesting and shady business going on there.

I did this digital painting during my drawing session with friends last night, it turned out pretty meaninful/controversial, for one the original tank-man image was a very powerful one, and now after reading this article in wired.com Google threatens to pull out of China after discovering attacks originating from China seeking e-mails from human rights activists and the company’s source codes.

It does make us wonder if this is the start of a mini revolution started by Google, if a similar incident happened again to the companies that still operate in China will other companies like Yahoo and Microsoft follow Google? and if so will China really back off and let the public have it's freedom or will China be closed off once more...remembering from past incidents China is not one to back down that easily, but I do hope for the people living in China that one day the World's information superhighway will one day be open to them and true freedom of speech could be archived without fear of being monitored by the Government.

Saw Avatar tonight with Mujia, Alex, Kristina and Rahi. We wanted the imax show but sold out by 2 in the afternoon so I went for a 3D ones at 10:45, last showing.

The movie did a very good job in sucking you into the world James Cameron created for the viewers and just seeing all the nice concept brought to life maybe me imagine just how nice the concept arts must have been, although the movie was quite long I never once cared about that I was too interested in the characters and the story unfolding. And yes like people said it does feel like "Dances With Wolves" kind of story, it felt like a classic story told in a different way, time and setting. I loved it! if this is where 3D is heading to in films I'm very excited to see what's to come and excited to learn all about 3D.

So I was working on this the past few days (and playing left 4 dead 2 maybe...) It was for a dA contest about the End of Days, and of course my end of day scenerio would be zombie apocalypse,I always been fascinated by Zombie Apocalypse movies and stories, hard to explain why…I guess it’s the thought of our society falling with the fall of men and the raise of a new virus that would rule the world was always a interesting concept to me.

So I posted my process stage, from rough (VERY ruff) to lines, to colours, I sometimes work super rough like that so i can capture my ideas faster without paying attention to details, if I start to think details I'll started putting too much lines down and lose the overall feeling.

Today's theme was picked by Vince and it was "Where is Jon Suh?", I guess I'll have to explain who he is, Jon was one of our classmate and friend at Sheridan and towards the end of last year or early this year we lost contact with him...again...yes it has happened before (first time we lost him to World of Warcraft I believe). With no ideas on where he could be, 'till this day it remains a mystery.

So the objective was to draw out what we thought he could be doing, it was a lot harder than it sounded but the results were very interesting and ammusing from missing milk cartons to going back home to North Korea to just spending time with himself and/or playing videogames. I personally restarted on the last 10 mins because I wasn't liking what I had for my initial idea.

Saw this film over the weekend wth my buddies, after the film I wasn't sure what to feel but it definately left an impact with us and I thought it was both beautiful and horroficlly disturbing, some girl behind us had a real shocking reaction to one of the scenes, she yelled out "JEEZ FUCKING JESUS!!" I couldn't agree more...it was very appropriate at that time.

Another drawing session today with Chienyu, the theme was sci-fi, and Flora and Scott joined us too in our 1 hour session, sci-fi being another one of those genres we rarely touch it was interesting to see how sci-fi turned out for everyone. The styles are all pretty different but still all fit withing the theme, very fun exercise because we get to see ideas that we didn't even come to us and what sci-fi meant to each induvidual.

So my buddy Chienyu wanted to do a drawing session, we gave ourselves one hour and I ended up picking a theme that we rarely touch...Medieval, after like 20 mins of looking on the net for research I finally got started and went for mood and setting approach, by the end we showed each other what we came up with and I was interested to see that Chienyu went for more of a character approach. It was a fun practice to be pushed to come up with something quick and see the different approach taken to complete the theme that I might not have thought about using.

Tank-A-Bot

I decided to go outside of my comfort zone and draw something I never draw...robots...anime and robots have never really come naturally to me, but it was a fun practice, I call it Tank-A-Bot, it's some sort of walking tank with 2 Uzis and from the looks of that little flag it belongs to the country I was born in, Venezuela hahaha (so random).

At closer inspection you can see a little soldier with a binocular in that hole hah.

I did 2 rough ver. of tank-a-bot and ultimately stuck with the chunkier ver. the skinny one reminded me too much of HK 47 from Star Wars: KTOR

So as I was sitting here waiting got Left4Dead 2 to come out, I started to sketch a Hunter from L4D1, one of my fav infected to use in versus games, you get to jump like Spiderman and pounce on a unsuspecting sucker.

While I was sketching I realised that after L4D2 is out no one will return to L4D1...which is a shame because most of us bought the game a year ago and already Valve has released another...well It's been a fun run, and hope the next installment is worthy of the last.

Oh..and is 1am Tue...and damn Steam still hadn't released L4D2!!! WTF is up with that?!?

Left 4 Dead 2 out Nov 17th!!! first thing I did after I got off the plane from HK was pre-order L4D2, it came with a 10% discount, a demo, and a digital in game baseball bat...that last one will be lame...but the demo was fun and the intro to it is great! really gives you that feeling that the new survival team has been through hell already to make it this far.

So I was playing as Coach (aka Uncle Phil) and I saw a Jockey coming at me, so I thought I would kill him with a machete chop...I swung and missed the jockey got on top of me and was riding the hell outta me until he took me to some corner away from the other survivors and I got gang raped by zombies...true story. I was so shocked and amazed by this it inspired me to roughly sketch out the scene that was burned into my head.

Top Best:
1st place I'll have to give it to the blue crab, I had some good hotpots while in Sichuan but the one food that stood out was the blue crab, I never had it before and I do love crabs, so one taste of this I could tell the meat was actually sweeter than the Vancouver or Snow Crab Im use to eating here in Canada. 2nd place goes to this thing call Crispy Fatty Cha Siu...never even knew there was such a thing but this pork meat melts in your mouth and the outter layer is sweet from it's sauce and crispy def one of the fav I had at my gf's restaurant in Sichuan. 3rd place goes to something quite simple the wonton noodle I had at this really small and shady street restaurant in HK, the line ups for tables was a good sign before I sat, and one taste of the noodle it's clear the noodles were by hand, very different than the store bought ones and the shrimps wontons were huge and juicy with they great think flavorful broth.

Top Worst:
At the top is the one and only pasta dish that got me instantly sick, I was puking and shitting all at once for an hour, good thing it was minor food poison. 2nd place is the crappy delay flight free lunch in Jiuzhai...there really was more rice than anything, there was a sad hot dog, soem cabbage and some brown pickle stuff, but hey at least it was free. 3rd place is pig brains...never tried it before so I did and it was like a creamy fishy tofu...at least now I can say I tried it but def not my cup of tea.

White Noise Records

On my last day I went hunting for the elusive White Noise Record my friend told me about, after a lot of walking around back and forth, I finally saw the little sign, I walk up this uninviting stairs and finally go into a door full of poster, post-rock fills my ears as I walk in, the air is cool and relaxing, the owner is hiding behind a counter doing his thing and not bugging you, so I walk in look around and see a collection if indie music, underground hiphop, japanese indie, post-rock, electronica, records, t-shirts, dvds, etc. After a long look I picked up the new Mono album and the new World's End Girlfriend, I almost picked up the Mono live dvd too but ....eeeh was short on cash, had a short chat with the owner cuz he could tell right away I wasn't local, sucks that his shop is so hidden, mainly because the music he is selling is not well known in HK and rent is quite expensive so all he can afford is this small shady place, but at least once you step in you feel like you are in a different world.

Last Day in HK

So it's been a over a month since I left home and experienced Hong Kong and partly Sichuan, although it was only 5 weeks long I felt like it's been months since leaving Canada, and during my stay in asia I learned many things about Hong Kong and China, from grandparents, my uncle, my gf's uncle, museums, and TV in HK. Although I'm chinese I was born and raised in South America and then moved to Canada I only knew Venezuelan and Canadian history never had any former education about asia, this trip has been a real eye openner and I've definately enjoyed this stay.

I picked a picture that best describes HK, and I think this picture on the mountain top at night really does it justice, even at nights the city is alive and bright, the vibe I got from HK is energy, everything moves so fast there is a lot of energy in the youth to keep them going on and on, yet calm enough at certain parts of the city for the old to live their lives like my grandparents. I will def miss it and I hope I can come back soon, perhaps even to work one day to have a change.

Went to Chengdu to visit and see my girlfriend and to see her hometown, it's probably my first real experience in China, and thanks to my girlfriend and her family it was a pretty great experience, because I always been a little afraid of my motherland and also I can't speak mandarin and can't read or write chinese I can only speak cantonese. But overall I experienced, ate, and saw things I could never experience in Canada, so Im glad I got to go.

Oh yeah I got to eat the Sichuan Hot pot...and try brains and frogs, brain was meh, but frog was great!

Crazy Cool Toy Store

Hong Kong Food Market

To a westerner this food market can look pretty ghetto and unsanitary but to these people is everyday life, I found it very interesting how skillfully my grandma is able to maneuver through the busy market even in her 80s, the street is packed with people, vendors and delivery trucks all competing for that little space.

Went up the mountain by cable car exploring this place myself, saw the epic giant buddha as I was going up and decided to check it out...the stairs up to the Buddha looked a lot easier to claim from far...but claiming the 80 or so steps at such high altitude wasn't fun, very awesome view up there though. Oh and cable cars and highwinds....not fun...

Cats and Dogs in HK

1st is a owner confusing her cat for a dog...I felt bad for that cat you could tell the cat wasn't cool with the idea at all.

2nd was the random dog in the street that kept on following me until we ran into a lady walking her small agressive dogs and a bark fest started.

3rd cat I found him at a store I was in thought he was quite interesting with 2 white feet at the back and different colors for the front feet, he seemed to like me.

Walmart in China

So Walmart in China is quite interesting, for starters the escalator as u go down on both sides you are surrounded by products you can pick up and buy on the way down, everyday things from condoms to klenex to maxi pads. When you get to the bottom level it suddenly turns into a asian supermarket complete with live fish and crabs, also strange and familiar drinks all with chinese names. Oh and did I mention there are some funny ass dvd movies? with bad Photoshop covers ripped from other movies?

Went to this exhibition and read up and saw some interesting stuff, weird thing they didn't let you photograph anything...not sure why you would think they'll want the public to learn more of China and it's Goverment's founding fathers.
